Natural environment

Bike enthusiasts can choose between dierent cycle routes connecting the villages along country roads. Walkers will instead find that the area offers numerous paths through the beech and chestnut woods. The Via Storica del Marmo [Historic Marble Route] hiking trail is worth a mention, leading from Sella Chianzutan to the red marble quarry and a voyage of discovery of one of the few examples of industrial archaeology in Carnia. An international art symposium entitled “La scultura in rosso” [Sculpture in red] is held as a reminder of this marble extraction every two years, with exhibitions of sculptures created from this unusual marble extracted from the Verzegnis quarries from all over the world. The quality of nature here is such that you nd a spring on the road between Villa Santina and Chialcis considered to be so healthy that it is called “La âga dal paradîs” (the water of paradise). The unmissable Arzino river waterfalls are indeed heavenly. The municipal area offers plenty of sporting activities from easy nature hikes or bike rides to organized climbing. Lovers of more adventurous sports can train on the natural rock climbing walls of the Cretons, a favourite location with experienced climbers. For those who enjoy thrills and excitement, there’s the annual “Cronoscalata Verzegnis-Sella Chianzutan” timed car race, attracting large numbers of international drivers and spectators.
